NY 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course
$49.00
At $49.00, IMPROV costs $6+ more than our top-rated providers while offering less features (no Spanish, AI-only support). We recommend Safe Drivers Academy ($43) or Defensive Drivers Institute ($42.95) instead.

IMPROV is a well-known brand in the driver education space, famous for their comedy-based approach to learning. While the concept is interesting, my experience left me questioning whether the premium price is justified. Here is my honest assessment.
IMPROV's main selling point is that they make the 5-hour course entertaining with humor and comedy. And yes, I did have a few laughs early on. But here is the thing: the schtick wears off pretty quickly. After the first hour or so, the jokes started feeling forced, and I just wanted to get through the material. If you are someone who needs entertainment to stay engaged, this might work for you. But for most people, a well-designed course with clear content (like SDA or DDI) will be just as easy to complete without the comedy tax.
At $49.00, IMPROV is the most expensive provider we reviewed. That is over $6 more than Safe Drivers Academy ($43.00) and over $6 more than DDI ($42.95). For that premium, what do you get? Comedy. That is pretty much it. You do not get Spanish language support. You do not get better customer service. In fact, you get worse customer service (more on that below).
This was my biggest frustration. IMPROV advertises "24/7 customer support," but when I tried to use it, I discovered it was just an AI chatbot. The bot could not answer my specific question about the course. When I asked to speak to a human, it kept redirecting me to generic help articles. For a company charging premium prices, this is unacceptable. Competitors like SDA and DDI have real humans who respond in under a minute.
About halfway through the course, the system glitched and I had to redo an entire content section. This was frustrating and ate up additional time. When I tried to report the issue through their chatbot, it was not able to help. Technical problems happen, but when there is no real support to resolve them, it becomes a much bigger issue.
IMPROV gets a 7.2/10. The course works, the identity validation is solid, and some people will enjoy the comedy. But at $49.00 with no real support and no Spanish option, I cannot recommend it over the alternatives. Save your $6+ and go with a top-rated provider instead.
| Provider | Price | Rating | Validation | Spanish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Drivers Academy | $43.00 | 9.8/10 | One-Time PIN | ✅ Yes |
| Defensive Drivers Institute | $42.95 | 9.3/10 | One-Time PIN | ✅ Yes |
| Safety Sense Solutions | $43.95 | 9.1/10 | One-Time PIN | ✅ Yes |
| IMPROV | $49.00 | 7.2/10 | One-Time PIN | ❌ No |
The comedy was fun at first but got old. Course itself was fine. Wish I had known there were cheaper options that were just as good.
Frustrated that their "support" is just a robot. Had a question about my completion and could not get a real answer. Eventually figured it out myself.
Decent course if you like comedy. The Google login was convenient. But $49 is steep compared to other options I saw after.
System crashed on me twice. No real customer service to help. Had to restart a whole section. Would not recommend.
