What We Think:
Defensive Drivers Institute has a nicely laid out course that is easy to follow and complete. It'll take you a little longer than five hours to finish it all. The study guide helps quite a bit when taking the quizzes, as it can be difficult to remember all the content covered.
The customer support was very quick to reply to our inquiries, responding in less than a minute in the live chat. When we reached out, they offered us the audio read-along for free at the end of our chat. It made the course much more enjoyable. It was an actual person reading it, not a computerized voice like some of the other providers.
Defensive Drivers Institute is a close second to the top position.

Safety Sense Solutions is a newer entrant to the NY 5-hour pre-licensing market, and they've made a strong impression. The first thing that stands out is the quality of the writing. Of all the courses we tested, SSS had the best-written curriculum by a clear margin. The content reads like it was crafted by professional educators rather than assembled from templates. Complex driving concepts are explained clearly and concisely, making the material genuinely engaging rather than something you just click through.
The bilingual support is another major differentiator. The entire course, including the audio read-along, is available in both English and Spanish. Frustrating experience trying to get customer support. They claim 24/7 customer support, but it really is just an AI chatbot that wasn't able to help or answer any questions specific to the course.
Had a few laughs during the course, but the schtick wore off quickly.

What We Think:
NTSI is another good option if you're looking to take your online prelicensing course. However, they're not quite on the same level as the first and second positions. Their learning platform was hard to use on a mobile device, and eventually gave up and used my laptop instead.
The One-Time-PIN validation method generally worked well, but when it failed once, we had to call customer support to get our course unlocked. The woman who answered the phone sounded very annoyed, but was able to unlock the course after a couple minutes.
Paid extra for the audio read-along, but by the end of the course, I could not stand the computerized voice anymore and left it muted. It became very annoying.
The tests at the end of modules were not easy. I was forced to start over after failing a test because I missed a question about a statistic. We had to call support again to get reset, and the woman sounded annoyed again when she answered.
All-in-all, it was a decent course. But there is some room for improvement.

What We Think:
This is another provider we would not recommend. New York Safety Council is owned by American Safety Council, and their reviews on TrustPilot are absolutely terrible. Our experience wasn't as bad as some, but it shows a consistent stream of unsatisfied customers.
The voice biometric validation method worked for the most part, but it was very irritating to call in and recite a long list of numbers. One validation failure was because my dog barked while I was validating. If you don't live in a quiet environment, you're going to fail and have your course reset.
After failing again, our course was reset. Unsure if this was going to be possible, I asked for a refund which was denied. Their terms of service does state they will not give refunds for lengthy list of reasons, one of which is repeatedly failing the voice validation.
I pressed forward and made sure it was quiet and I was able to get through the course. Unless you plan on taking the course in a quiet library, go with someone else.

What We Think:
Avoid this provider. Go check out what others are saying on their TrustPilot page. I refuse to believe their positive reviews are real. Their negative reviews all had a similar experience to mine.
Only positive thing I can say was that their course content I was able to get through was easy to follow. But you get interrupted by the wildly inaccurate keystroke verification system. When I finally was able to reach their customer support, they told me that the keystroke validation doesn't work with mobile phones, unless I have a keyboard connected to it. Who has a keyboard connected to their phone?! Bizarre. I tried again on my laptop and it still didn't work.
I cannot speak to their completion reporting because when they tried to charge me again due to failure from the keystroke validation, I gave up and cut my losses. I will not be providing a link to sign up with this school.
